A Cure For Medical Profession Problems

If you're a physician and you happen to graduate from medical school in 1955, it was the time when young doctors had a world of opportunities, plenty of jobs in nice places with high salaries. But then one of them wasn't as auspicious as the rest. He was one of thousands of students who graduated from medical school and entered a competitive job market with lower pay and job uncertainty.

Though it was once the golden profession, it has now become rusty as the once sacred doctor patient relationship has been corrupted and the doctors also have less autonomy with the rise of managed care systems. A lot of these students who graduate from medical school soon find out where they shall receive their postgraduate residencies. Matching day is great for those who find themselves ending up in their preferred hospitals. For those who are not as auspicious, this is just a dismal reality check on what awaits them.

A survey reveals recently that there is just a huge supply of doctors and medical schools. In a recent report from the journal of the American Medical association, more than 10 percent of doctors trained in a specialty still are unable to find career opportunities in some parts of the country. A company funded study results recommended that medical schools must close due to the excessive surplus of doctors and also stated that they should admit 20 to 25 percent less students.

Many doctors will soon be eliminated as jobs will be closed by a medical centre in Boston that also teaches for a university. A doctor that now serves as dean for a renowned med school remembers that things were not as dismal then as it is now. He recalls that there were plenty of positions for those who wanted to specialize in a field of medicine. In the past several years, many among the students graduating medicine choose to partake in generalist fields which include paediatrics, family practice and internal medicine because they have observed the steady growth these areas have had since the early 1990s.

The national resident matching program has stated that there is a huge sink among the doctors who have chosen to specialize in psychiatry, diagnostic radiology and anaesthesiology also known as specialty fields. For example, the number of students entering anesthesiology has dropped dramatically. Because of the meager work opportunities available, a senior medical student got discouraged towards taking anaesthesiology. He adds that they are too saturated now. But then a female member of the American medical association breaks the allegations of a doctor surplus as many areas like rural towns are in dire need of having doctors attend to the members of their community.

This lady doctor also notes that they take a huge risk as many of their brightest young students no longer embark into the medical profession thanks of all these things they hear that turns them off even before they really verify if these are true or not. Although being faced with a level of uncertainty, most of these new doctors remain optimistic thanks to the TV shows with medical themes that make the country appreciate the field of medicine. Another female doctor finishes positively by saying that while they no longer make that kind of money and hold the autonomy they had before, she still states that this is the best profession in the world.
